How to use Ledger to create Mixin Safe?

Prepare a Ledger wallet



You could visit the Ledger official website to purchase it.

Follow the prompt messages to install Ledger Live and initialize your Ledger wallet, set the PIN up, copy and securely store the mnemonic and verify the mnemonic.

Update Fireware to version 1.1.0 or up.



Open Ledger Live, click My Ledger on the left sidebar, and connect the Ledger wallet via USB-C; then input the PIN to unlock the device, then start installing Bitcoin App:


Please note that Fireware must be upgraded to 1.1.0 or above, and the version of the Bitcoin application should be 2.1.2 or above, otherwise, the register Safe step may prompt a data error.

This tutorial is tested with Ledger Nano S Plus. The browser should be Chrome 61+, Edge 79+, or Opera 48+. For more supported browsers, please refer to the link.

Create the Mixin Safe



Log in the Safe dashboard, and create "+ New Safe"

Name the Safe and select Bitcoin Network



Set up the Owner

3.1 Select Ledger as the Owner key wallet

3.2 Connect the device

Keep your Ledger device unlocked and open the Bitcoin app:



3.3 Get the public key

Click the button to connect the hardware wallet via webusb:



Select the connected hardware wallet on the pop-up window and tap the Connect button to get the public key:



Tap the Next button to save.

Set up members

Add the family members, friends, or colleagues you trust to the members to co-manage the assets and set up a reasonable co-ownership model.

Preview and create the Safe

Active the Safe

6.1 Register Safe to the Ledger Wallet



Click the Register button, then view and approve the Safe, Policy, Key, and other info. Please note that this step may take a dozen or more taps on the Ledger, which is a bit cumbersome but a one-time operation:



6.2 Active the Safe

Click the Activate button on the safe dashboard, and sign the message on Ledger:



Wait about 30 seconds to activate the Safe then you can top up BTC to this address.

Common mistakes


Ledger device: Invalid data received (0x6a80)
Please upgrade your Ledger wallet's Fireware to 1.1.0 or higher, and reinstall the Bitcoin app to make sure the version is 2.1.2 or higher.

Ledger device: Locked device (0x5515)
Please input the PIN to unlock the device.

Ledger device: UNKNOWN_ERROR (0x6511)
When you open the Bitcoin app in the Ledger wallet, the Bitcoin icon and the words Bitcoin is ready should appear on the current screen.

Ledger device: UNKNOWN_APDU (0x6d02)
When you open the Bitcoin app in the Ledger wallet, the Bitcoin icon and the words Bitcoin is ready should appear on the current screen.
