How to use the upgrade tool to complete TIP upgrade (API Error 20118)

Due to the Mixin API upgrade at the end of 2024, some users who have not upgraded to TIP may encounter errors (such as error code 20118) when logging in to Mixin Messenger. We have released a dedicated upgrade tool to help you complete your account upgrade and restore normal access.
This guide will walk you through how to complete the upgrade using this tool and log back into Mixin Messenger.


Complete the upgrade using the tool (TIP upgrade)

  1. Open the tool page


Visit the Mixin Legacy PIN Upgrade page on your mobile or computer browser.


  1. Enter your phone number
Please enter your phone number in the format 📱 +CountryCodePhoneNumber, for example: for a USA number, enter +17240000000.


  1. Enter the verification code you received
    A verification code will be sent to your entered phone number. Please fill it in correctly.


  1. Enter the correct PIN
    Enter the PIN (password) you previously used for this account. Make sure it is correct.
If you’re not sure which PIN it is, we recommend writing down the combinations you try to avoid repeating attempts.


  1. Done
    Once successfully verified, the page will show that your upgrade is complete.


Log back into Mixin Messenger

Please delete your current Mixin installation, download again, and then log in.


  1. Download and install the latest version of Mixin Messenger
    📱 Android users:


Download via Google Play Store
📱 iOS users:


Please use a non-mainland China and non-UK Apple ID, then install via App Store

  1. Log into Mixin Messenger
    Enter your phone number and verification code to log into your account.


  1. Complete TIP setup
    After logging in, the system will prompt you to set a TIP password (PIN). You can enter a new PIN or use your previous PIN. Please note:


You will be asked to enter the PIN multiple times during setup. Make sure they are consistent.
This PIN is very important. Please keep it safe.


  1. Done
    Congratulations! You can now use Mixin Messenger normally, including transfers and trading.


If you have not yet migrated your assets, you can follow this guide: How to migrate assets from the old wallet to the new wallet?. Note: Migration now includes a review mechanism, and it typically takes 3-4 days for assets to arrive in the new system wallet. Please be patient.

  1. What if the upgrade tool page doesn’t open?


Try the following:


  • Switch to a different network (Wi-Fi or cellular data)
  • Try again using a VPN


  1. What if I get Failed to fetch after entering my phone number and clicking to send the code?


This is also a network issue. Please try:


  • Switching to a different network
  • Using a VPN


  1. What happens if I enter the wrong PIN on the tool page?


  • You have 9 attempts. If exceeded, the page will show Error 403 or Forbidden, and the account will be locked for 30 days.
  • Please wait patiently for the lock period to expire before trying again. Do not keep retrying during this time.
Each time you enter a verification code to log in also counts as an attempt, so do not refresh and repeat unnecessarily!


  1. What if I forgot my PIN?


The PIN cannot be recovered. You can only try to recall it. Please operate carefully to avoid being locked out.

We recommend writing down each PIN you try to avoid repeating the same attempts.


  1. What if my phone number is no longer available?


  • If you have not set an emergency contact, please contact your carrier to retrieve your phone number and then use the tool.
  • If you have set a recovery contact (formerly called "emergency contact"): currently, the tool does not support logging in via recovery contact. Please reach out to our official support team:

  1. What if after using the tool, I still get a PIN error when logging into Mixin?


Please wait 7 days and try again.
