Mixin Messenger Mnemonic Phrase feature

Starting from version 2.0.0, Mixin Messenger supports mnemonic phrase functionality.

Update Mixin Messenger to version 2.0.0 from the official website .

How it works

As shown in the diagram, Mixin Messenger’s MPC wallet consists of three key shards:

  • PIN Shard: One shard is associated with the user’s PIN code.
  • Account Shard: The phone number, mnemonic phrase, or recovery contacts are linked to the same key shard.
  • TIP Shard: A shard is stored via the TIP decentralized key network.

The key shards are ultimately combined to form a complete private key stored within the device’s TEE (Trusted Execution Environment), ensuring no risk of leakage.

FAQs

  • What’s the Difference Between Registering with a Mnemonic Phrase or a Phone Number?
Registering with a mnemonic phrase offers better privacy than using a phone number, but managing a mnemonic phrase yourself can be challenging and carries the risk of leakage or loss.

  • Is a Mnemonic Phrase More Secure Than a Phone Number?
Not necessarily. If you cannot securely manage your mnemonic phrase, we recommend continuing to use a phone number.

  • If I register my Mixin account with a phone number, do I need to back up a mnemonic phrase?
It’s not mandatory. If you cannot manage a mnemonic phrase securely, we recommend using a phone number.

  • Can I Use Both a Mnemonic Phrase and a Phone Number Simultaneously?
Yes. If you registered your Mixin account with a mnemonic phrase, you can add a phone number in Settings > Account > Security > Recovery Kit. Once added, you can log in to the same account using the phone number.

  • How Do I Set a Recovery Contact for an Account Registered with a Mnemonic Phrase?
You cannot directly set a recovery contact for mnemonic-phrase-based accounts. You must first add a phone number to the account. After adding a phone number, you can then set up recovery contacts.
